Saving Grace’s French Toast

Saving Grace’s French Toast With Banana-Caramel Sauce

Saving Grace’s French Toast isn’t your typical soft challah slice with a creamy soufflé interior instead they opted for French baguettes which are firm with a crispy exterior. The baguette was perfectly golden-brown with a soft center yet held up well with the warm banana-caramel sauce without getting soggy.

I ordered the half order of French toast with the Italian sausage on the side (total cost of $8.50). The half order is a genius option! I dislike restaurants that pile their French toast or pancakes stack high. That’s great visually but realistically I could never finish it (such a waste). Also, they always become soggy half-way through and for brunch, I want a little taste of everything on my plate. At Saving Grace, I could order something sweet and savory without over ordering and paying plus the food was delicious! However, expect a wait, it’s usually busy on the weekends I waited 30 mins in the cold since they don’t have a waiting area inside the restaurant.

I’ve decided to remake this dish because I love banana-caramel sauce and it’s super easy to make. Plus, I would rather eat my French toast in my pajamas.

Banana-Caramel Sauce
1/2 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 small banana, sliced

French Toast
3 slices banquette, sliced 1-inch thick
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 pinch salt
1/2 tablespoon unsalted butter

  1. In a bowl, whisk together milk, egg, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract and salt.
  1. Soak the bread slices in the egg mixture for a total of 5 mins.
  1. In a frying pan, heat butter over med-high heat until melted. Add the soaked banquette to the frying pan and cook for 5 minutes per side, until golden brown. (Lower the heat if banquette is browning too fast.)
  1. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan over med heat melt butter and sugar. Once, sugar has melted add the milk; mix well. Add bananas to caramel cook until soft and coated in sauce; 2 mins.
  1. Serve the French toast with the banana caramel sauce over each slice.
